This week at the Game Developers Conference in Paris, Electronic Arts' subsidiary DICE Studios announced that several different Battlefield games were currently in different stages of development.
Ben Cousins, executive producer for DICE, told the GDC audience during his keynote that the developer is working on a variety of different Battlefield games. "Since the start of this year I've been working as executive producer for the entire Battlefield franchise," he said. "We've got five titles in development at the moment, which is probably more than you expect."
Two of these games are already close to release. Battlefield: Bad Company hits retail stores this week, while the web-based Battlefield: Heroes is currently in beta and is slated for release later this summer. The other three games DICE is working on have yet to be officially announced, but one is expected to be a console title, and another is supposedly a collaboration between DICE and Neowiz, a Korean company that is 19 percent-owned by EA. This game would be specifically for the Korean market.
The third title could be a PC-only Battlefield 3, details of which were leaked last October despite being denied by EA and DICE. The rumors point to another modern combat game much like Battlefield 2, but with a brand new engine and even more unlockable content (camouflage, ammo, battle armor, and more). Regardless, fans of the franchise should have plenty of content for the next several years.
