Age of Conan Hits the 1 Million Mark
June 9, 2008 13:16
The fantasy-based MMORPG Age of Conan has shipped one million copies just three weeks after its launch, according to Funcom.
Based on recent sales figures and consumer demand, the standard edition already sold out in numerous territories while an additional shipment spanning hundreds of thousands of copies barely fulfills the overwhelming demand for the game. Currently Age of Conan has breached the 500,000 shipment mark in North America alone.
"Sales data shows that Age of Conan is the biggest MMO launch since World of Warcraft," said Funcom Vice President of Sales and Marketing Morten Larssen is a press statement. "The numbers are very promising, and we are very proud to be one of the fastest selling PC games ever in a launch month and the biggest simultaneous Europe/US MMO launch in history."
Despite Funcom's prior history with MMORPGs, it's no surprise that Age of Conan has done so well in so little time. As reported earlier, more than one million players signed up to take part in the beta, with 8 million unique visitors hitting the website since the beginning of the year. Although Funcom claims that the game has received "critical acclaim across the globe," Age of Conan currently has just a few full reviews so far with an average score in the mid-80s, according to review compilation sites like Metacritic and Gamerankings.com.
Although Funcom bathes in high sales figures and high demand, that MMORPG has not been without controversy. The first issue was the surprise news that the DirectX 10 version of Age of Conan was not shipping at launch. In addition, there have been some complaints regarding client stability, balance issues and a lack of customer service from Funcom.
Launched May 20th in the U.S., Age of Conan yanks subscribers into Robert E. Howard's Hyborian Age, during the time period transpiring just one year after the Conan novel The Hour of the Dragon. The subscription costs the standard $15 monthly fee and ignores the usual click/hotkey combat system, relying solely on gameplay found in action/RPG titles.
Currently the game claims the #1 spots on sales charts across the Western world including the U.S., Germany, France and the U.K. Funcom reports that over 800,000 subscribers have joined the Clan of Conan club as well.
